What do you really want out of life? What if money were no object? If you could have anything, what would you want out of life?
Imagine with me. I do this in career counseling with high school students. And, college students.
What’s possible for your life?
They come to me and say… Well I’m getting out of school soon and I really don’t have a clue what I want to do with my life.
So I always ask the question: if money were no object, how would you want to spend your life? Every day. Every hour. What would you really love to do?
It never ceases to amaze me how quickly young person will tell me all of the reasons they can’t do what they would love to do with their life.
I’d love to be a musician. I want to play guitar.
I would really love to be a Vet. I want to care for wild horses, sick puppies, and calico cats.
One will say I want to care for orphans in Africa or Haiti.
But I know I can’t make any money that way.
When we finally get down to the truth – what you really want to do with your life…
I ask the question again: Imagine… Whats possible for your life?
When you’re finally able to actually say the words that describe whats possible for your life.
I say – do that.
Do that with all your mind. With all your heart. With all your strength.
Do Whats Possible
Don’t worry about the money. Do whats possible.
What’s important about money to you?
Whats possible in your life?
What matters most?
Because, if you say that getting more money is what matters most, you’ll spend all of your life Getting more money. You will waste your life in order to have more money.
You’ll spend more and more of your life to get more and more money so that you can spend more and more of your life to get more and more money – this is insanity.
So much better to have a short life filled with meaning, passion, and satisfaction (purpose) than a long life filled with Emptiness.
The truth is, if you really love what you do, you will become a master at it. It’s the only way to become a master at it – and it doesn’t matter what it is – if you love what you do you will become a master at it.
And then, you will be rewarded for adding value to the world. You’ll find that people are happy to pay your fee for whatever it is that you love doing.
The alternative is to invest your life doing something you hate. And then, expect that you will be satisfied. The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and yet expect different results.
Maybe your parents didn’t do a great job teaching you the truth about money, life, and relationships.
The relationship between your money and your life is the first and most important lesson of personal finance.
Whats Possible is Success, Significance, and Satisfaction
The greatest pain in life and the most common pain in life is the pain of unmet expectations.
When we teach our children that money will give us success, significance, and satisfaction, We set them up for the immense pain of unmet expectations.
