Something magical happened to me this week that left me touched, moved, and inspired. In today’s episode, I’ll share it with you.
I have a really big “ASK” for you in this episode.
Actually, I want to let you listen in as I send a voicemail to my new Facebook friend Michael Stelzner from SocialMediaExaminer.com and my old friend Phillip Taylor, aka “PT”. He is a husband and father of two beautiful little girls. Phillip created PT Money back in 2007 to share his ideas about money and to meet other people who are passionate about financial management.
PT promises to “Help You Do More With Your Money in Half the Time”
PT’s content is designed to help you make extra money, save more money, and spend your money wisely. Sound familiar? Earn More. Save More. Live More. I’m not certain where I came up with my three-part tagline but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it came to me as a result of reading PT’s blog posts. According to PT, “All three of these components are critical if you want to experience financial freedom:
Earn More. Save More. Live More.
You can follow Philip Taylor on Twitter @PTMoney. Philip is the founder of #FinCon. I attended #FinCon12 in Denver, Colorado last year. And, I’ll be attending #FinCon13 in St. Louis this October.
#FinCon is basically a four day conference designed to bring together the best of the financial blogging community for learning, collaborating, networking, and serious fun.
When: October 17-20, 2013
#FinCon (also known as the Financial Blogger Conference) is an annual event with a dual mission:
1. Provide a “real world” connection for the people who enjoy new media (Think #Podcast #Blog and #Vlog) and personal finance.
2. Peer education in current consumer financial trends, tactics, and new media strategies (Re-Think #Podcast #Blog #Vlog and #WhatNot).
#FinCon is Where I Created iMakeYourMoneyCount
I want you to listen to my friend Michael Stelzner as he shares something that I think is so important for anyone with young kids in their family or extended family. My kids are grown and – so far – I have no Grand Kids. But from the moment I heard Michael share his vision and his purpose for My Kids Adventures, I wanted to support him. This week, when I had my “Magical Moment” I knew I had to do something.
I’m going to play about 6 minutes of Michael sharing his vision for My Kids Adventures. This is from Starve The Doubts – a podcast hosted by my friend Jared Easley. Jared was at my house here in Houston a couple weeks ago and he told me about his interview with Michael but it was still kind of a secret because Michael was about to launch My Kids Adventures. Before I play this 6 minute segment of Jared’s interview with Michael Stelzner, let me tell you about my magical moment this week and why I feel compelled to share it with you, PT, Michael Stelzner, Dustin Hartzler – and our friends at #FinCon and My Kids Adventures.
So, I was on vacation with my family this week in Ohio. We rented a beautiful Lakehouse at Indian hollow. My extended family from Michigan joined us at the lake house. We had big plans for the week. And then, on Monday, it rained for most of the day. Our vacation was scheduled to last only four days. So a rain day is kind of a drag.
The kids had their hearts set on lots of fun in the sun, swimming, fishing, boating, and tubing!
Connie is the master planner for our family vacations. So, she jumped into action to create some fun (indoor) activities while it rained.
We did have Wi-Fi at our lake house. So, the digital addiction was being fueled with iPods, iPads, iPhones, and androids all around the house.
My most recent “digital addiction” is making little videos with my iPhone. My contribution for our family vacation this year was making one short video to highlight the events of each day.
As always, I had some hidden motives. I’m trying to learn how to take awesome videos with my iPhone. I want to learn to capture compelling moments. I’m hoping to learn to use my iPhone to create interesting and engaging video content to help market my business.
My goal was to create one video for each day. Like I said, my “digital addiction” was being satisfied and the rainy day turned out to be one of the best days to capture interesting video. I posted rainy Ohio on my Vimeo account. You can check it out whenever you want – you’ll know why this might matter to you after you hear my Magical Moment.
My beautiful little nieces – Makaiah and Cianna – were the featured stars of every video. Trust me, these little drama queens are pretty fancy in front of an iPhone.
The magical moment.
By the end of our rain day, I noticed that Makaiah was busy working on her iPod. Like most 11-year-olds, Makaiah was having a lot of fun doing her work. Makaiah has this heartwarming smile that captures your curiosity. So, I had to ask… “Makaiah, what are you working on?”
It was no secret. I’m working on my own video.
Makaiah’s video was – hands-down – better than my video. She engaged her imagination, applied a ton of creativity, and worked diligently on all of the details including a four-color piece of hand-drawn artwork – a crayon creation that was converted to a digital masterpiece for her finished video.
While I completed my goal of one video per day, my ultimate goal was to figure out how to shoot a lot of video clips and then dump them altogether into iMovie to create a halfway decent video. Since I’m still learning how to use my Mac book Pro and my iPhone together, I was more interested in the process than the finished product.
Not Makaiah. The process for her was very intuitive. She didn’t have to think about the “how to” of the process. Her objective was to create a great video. Makaiah’s video clearly communicated family, fun, and love.

Jim’s Offer to #FinCon and My Kids Adventures
Michael and Phillip, you guys have done an amazing job building an online community around What Matters Most. Clearly, you understand that “your thing” is infinitely bigger than you. And, your community gets it, too.
So, why not join hands and create an even bigger Adventure for our communities together.
Michael, I’m asking you to invite My Kids Adventures to consider some fun and engaging activities that will teach kids the principles and the process for managing money so that – when they have their own kids – their family financial tree will be strong enough to weather any storm.
In the beginning of 2014 I’ll launch FinancialTrails.com The Ultimate Wealth Building Solution. The concept is more powerful than the tagline. Its about teaching kids the foundational principles they’ll need to be capable of managing money, life, and relationships. In order to experience success, significance, and satisfaction, kids have to learn to responsibly manage money and in our culture of consumerism – and with all of the digital addiction we see everyday – kids won’t just grow this muscle without some adult intentionality.
Phillip, I’ll be meeting with members in our #FinCon community in St. Louis to invite some of our leaders to consider becoming Charter Members of FinancialTrails. I want to invite #FinCon #Leaders and #MyKidsAdventures supporters to share their stories through #Podcasts #Blogs and #Vlogs

I’m asking for volunteers to help their kids, grand-kids, nieces, and nephews create a news story with their iPhone, iPod, iPad, Android and whatever other digital device they’ve already grown addicted to. And, we will provide the training to help busy working parents at FinancialTrails.com
